Jamesville-DeWitt High School students, and girls and boys basketball players are preparing for the 315 community basketball game against Fulton on January 28 starting at 5 pm. The game and the shirts that are being sold will raise money for Golisano Children’s Hospital, which helps kids who are sick. The Syracuse Men’s basketball players will attend. The Corporate Communication students and basketball players hope that the game will build the biggest sense of community and inclusion in the district.
Corporate Communication teacher Terri Eaton described how the class came up with the idea of the 315 game: “The students came up with the idea of wanting to do something with the Syracuse players, and someone in the class had come up with the 315 idea.”
Junior Jagger Bell, student from Corporate Communications, said “me and senior Jack Pole thought a basketball game was a good idea by getting the community together, and raising awareness and money for sick kids in Golisano Children’s Hospital.”
Bell also says he got in touch with the Syracuse basketball players through Coach James Jones. Jones knew that J-D graduate and former Corporate Communications student Evan Dourdas was now the men’s basketball player development assistant for Syracuse. He got in touch with him and was then able to get the Syracuse basketball players on board.
As for the game, “We feel very confident playing Fulton as we won against them last month by 9 points,” said junior Miles Patchen, a center for the basketball team. Patchen says he is very excited for the Syracuse basketball players being in attendance.
“Last time we played (Fulton), we won away and now we play them home so we feel confident going into this game,” said sophomore Sam Jacobs, a shooting guard for J-D. Jacobs is also very excited for the Syracuse basketball players coming to the game, to watch and participate.
Corporate Comms is a business class that involves project-based learning, where students create everything. “They also have to come up with ideas and they have to implement them, make it happen and all the details that go into it,” said Eaton. That is what makes Corporate Communication a student centered class.
