Jamesville-DeWitt High School has many flourishing programs, clubs, and groups that encompass a lot of different interests. One of the more exclusive groups is InAchord, the school’s select singing group. InAchord is highly competitive and only a select few get in after an audition process. Once the audition process was complete, InAchord’s held its first performance on Dec. 17.
Chorus teacher Eric Toyama explains that during the audition, students must sing an excerpt from a song of their choice, as well as complete a dancing sequence, sight sing a piece of music, and sing in four part harmony with their peers. From there, he judges students based on their score from the audition and their audition etiquette, such as being polite to their classmates.
Junior Rubisha Mali, who is starting her third year in InAchord, says she had always looked up to students who were involved in InAchord. “We worked with them when I was in GTS (Good Time Singers) in middle school, and they were like role models to me,” she said. “I’ve been wanting to be in the group since elementary school,” said junior Reese Ristau. “I was like ‘That, I want to do that!’” Sophomore Charlotte Waldman said that being in the group “gives a great sense of community.”
This year is sophomore Yara Alamir’s first year in InAchord. She says she has always been interested in singing. Joining InAchord was a must for her. “I think I really fit into it now,” she said. Senior Matthew Centolella joined InAchord because of both his interest in singing and the entertainment that this group gives. Junior Samuel Vander Molen expressed how he liked that he got to sing more music in concerts now that he is in InAchord now. “Learning the dances is really entertaining,” freshman Piper Bell said.
InAchord rehearses every Wednesday evening from 7 pm-9 pm, working on music and dance to put together a lovely performance for all this winter.
