The Varsity Boys and Girls track teams are back in action and are poised for a successful winter season. They both won sectional championships last year, and sent a few athletes to states. Junior captain and thrower Henry Middleton is looking for a repeat this year. “I believe we have a lot of potential this year,” says Middleton. The boys and girls teams are coached by Head and Distance coach Mike Melfi and his assistants, Throwing Coach Brennan Schwab and Sprinting Coaches Bill Leberman and Michael Acchione.
The girls team is lead by their senior captains, thrower Jessica Pace and sprinter Mackenzie Maxam, along with junior captain, and long distance specialist Hannah Butler. They are eager to compete again as they look forward to defending their sectional title this season. “Our team is very capable and talented, so I strongly believe we can win a sectional and league title,” says Pace. “I think we’ll do really well and most likely win leagues and sectionals,” says junior sprinter Alexia Carr. The girls have a lot of experience and success in the past that they hope will lead them to yet another sectional championship.
The boys team is lead by senior captain sprinter Nolan Russa and junior captains, Middleton and long distance runner Chris Blust. The boys are excited to see how well they can do this year. They are especially excited to see what newcomer Jan Ramirez can do. Ramirez is a senior football wide receiver who has speed he hopes will translate well to the track. “We think he’s gonna be scoring in a lot of events,” says Middleton. “Being a newcomer to track my experience in indoor has been really great so far. I hope to help lead the team to sectionals,” says Ramirez. Even though they lost a lot of seniors, they hope that some of their sophomores can step up and fill the void.
