Meet Ms. Delaney: A New Teacher at J-DHS

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I grew up near Camillus and went to West Genny High School. I went to LeMoyne for college because of their renowned teaching program. My hobbies include going to the gym, reading books, cooking fun unique recipes, making my own jewelry, and spending time with loved ones. I am passionate about being a positive influence on the people around me both in school and out of school. I hope to bring positivity to people’s lives. A fun fact about me is that I love to travel and I want to take a return trip to Italy.

  1. Why did you want to become a teacher?

I wanted to be a teacher because I liked the idea of working with kids and helping them have those “a-ha!” moments of understanding where they feel proud of themselves. I also feel that a good education is fundamental to people’s development and growth and I wanted to be a part of that.

  1. What made you want to teach at Jamesville-DeWitt High School?

J-DHS felt like a welcoming and close knit community. From my first interview I had a good feeling about the people who worked at JDHS and I was very excited when I was offered the job to have the opportunity to work with them and become a member of the Social Studies department.

  1. How has the first month of teaching at J-D been?

Teaching with Covid has been an unexpected twist. When I started we did not have Covid and the restrictions that came with it. There are times when I miss being able to see everyone’s face but I think by now everyone is used to it and we have adapted well. Last year was hard not having all the students in school. It is better this year being able to see everyone and check in with them in person. I look forward to seeing my students and creating what they feel is a positive place to come to so we can learn together! I also look forward to lunch since I love food! 🙂 My favorite memories are when my students and I laugh together in class and can have light-hearted moments.

  1. What is one thing that you would ask of your students while they’re in your classroom?

One thing I ask of my students is that they also be a part of creating a positive environment in our classroom together, based on mutual respect for everyone in the room. And that they ask me when they need help, that’s what I’m here for!

  1. What do you hope to accomplish later in your career?

I am getting my master’s degree right now so I will complete that but other than that I am not thinking about the future yet and am just trying to enjoy where I am and be present in the moment right now.
