“I think Pi Day is going to be marvelous,” said Mu Alpha Theta President Ryan Pike. During activity period on March 14, 2014, Jamesville-DeWitt High School’s math honor society, Mu Alpha Theta, is throwing their first annual Pi Day celebration. Pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, is celebrated on this day because when written numerically, 3-14, it matches up with the first three numbers of Pi.
Many activities are scheduled for Pi Day, such as student performances, pi poem readings, and pieing a math teacher in the face. “There will be the ‘pi’ the teacher event,” said Mu Alpha Theta advisor Betty Wood. Everyone should come, she urged, saying, “It’s supporting their fellow students in an activity, and doing something fun that’s math related.”
Pi day is free of charge, but the week leading up to the celebration, students are able to buy t-shirts for $10, or vote on which teacher to pie by donating spare change. Pi day will be held in the Large Cafeteria.
