The 73rd Emmy Awards occurred on September 19, 2021 with the biggest stars of TV in attendance. With the pandemic still plaguing the world, Sunday night’s Emmy Awards showed a little glimmer of hope. TV is something that can bring many communities together, andmany can be enticed by a really good TV show, whether it is a light-hearted comedy, like “Ted Lasso,” or a dark drama, like “The Crown.” The best thing to come out of this pandemic has been the great TV shows that we all watched and enjoyed.
The biggest winner from the night definitely was “The Crown,” which took home seven wins from their 14 nominations. The most notable wins were for outstanding drama series, best lead actress in a drama series, best supporting actress in a drama series, best lead actor in a drama series, and best supporting actor in a drama series. This show has many amazing aspects to it, most notably the costuming, writing, and directing. Although “The Crown” was among the most celebrated shows, another show also took home many coveted awards. “Ted Lasso,” starring Jason Sudeikis, took home four Emmys from their 11 nominations. The show won best supporting actress in a comedy series, best supporting actor in a comedy series, best lead actor in a comedy series, and outstanding comedy series. This show was celebrated for its light-hearted but extremely entertaining content.
“The Queen’s Gambit” was also a big winner because of its immediate and undeniable success through some of the toughest parts of the pandemic. It won many notable awards, such as best limited or anthology series, best directing for a limited or anthology series, best lead actress in a limited or anthology series, best supporting actor and actress in a limited or anthology series, and best writing for a limited or anthology series. It came out as the pandemic’s second large wave hit the United States, causing many to stay inside their houses once again with nothing to do except watch TV. This pandemic hit many low points during the previous year and “The Queen’s Gambit,” among other shows, helped many get through those valleys.
While this pandemic has shown us how resilient and patient we can be, something we all shared, along with the dullness and boring nature of the pandemic, was the love and appreciation for television. Television was a way to escape from the crazy world that we were living in. Through political turmoil and uncertainty, TV was the way we could all relate to each other, which was a great thing as we all had a chance to learn through these times.
