Just because you win a Grammy Award doesn’t mean you are popular among Jamesville-DeWitt High School students. On Saturday, Jan. 26, the most popular singers and songwriters all gathered together to honor some of 2013’s best music accomplishments. Along with announcing the winners, there were many performances by some of today’s most popular artists. Winning awards doesn’t mean you win over J-DHS students.

J-DHS students were surprised by certain awards, but others were just as they expected. “I didn’t expect Daft Punk to win album and record of the year,” said freshman Willa Shiomos. She was also upset that Taylor Swift didn’t receive an award this year. Freshmen Giovanni Antonucci and Aoife McCaul agree that Ed Sheeran deserved to win something. “Ed Sheeran should have won every award. Not just the awards he was nominated for, but everything,” said McCaul. While some winners weren’t expected, others were what people had anticipated. For a list of the winners of all major awards, see below.

Although there are many awards handed out throughout this event, a lot of famous singers and bands are chosen to entertain the wild crowds. They were picked because they were thought to be some of the best performers, but the J-DHS community didn’t agree with some of the choices. A majority of students agree that Beyoncé and Pink had two of the best performances of the night. Sophomore Hannah Gunther said that Beyoncé’s performance was her favorite because she enjoyed the song, “Drunk in Love,” that she sang. Geometry teacher Meaghan Mark said that she really enjoyed Pink because “she does stunts and it’s cool.” Ms. Mark who “likes country” also enjoyed Hunter Hayes and Kacey Musgraves. Shiomos said that Taylor Swift’s performance was the best because it “showcased her talents.” Junior Shannon Theobald said that Lorde “looked like she was possessed by a demon, but it was really good.”

At the Grammys, the world gets a chance to witness the unique outfit choices of their favorite artists. The majority of people agreed Taylor Swift’s dress was their favorite. Junior Maria Bussone said Miley Cyrus looked better than she has in the past few months. “But I thought Lorde looked like a witch,” said Bussone. Gunther said she didn’t really like Beyoncé’s outfit because it was “lingerie.” Ms. Mark said she thought Kacey Musgrave’s dress was weird, but the boots were okay. Junior Jack Fennell said that Robin Thicke’s wife, Paula Patton, had a zebra print outfit that was “so hideous. It was the ugliest dress I’ve ever seen in my life.”

In future Grammy Awards, people are eager to see some different performers nominated. Lana Del Ray was a popular recommendation along with Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber. Some students agree that Lorde shouldn’t receive as much attention as she did during this year’s awards. People said they would rather have more attention put on Beyoncé because she showcased her talents well during her performance this year.
