On Saturday, May 7, Jamesville-DeWitt High School and Fayetteville-Manlius High School clashed in a series of both junior varsity and varsity sports, in the first annual Rivalry Cup. The Varsity contests were all very competitive with the two boys games being decided in overtime. The Hornets emerged victorious with a record of 5-3 after winning all four lacrosse games and the JV baseball game. The Red Rams won the varsity baseball, varsity softball and JV softball contests.
The J-DHS Varsity Baseball team won 7-6 on a walk-off double in extra innings by junior captain Matthew Cappelletti. He drove in fellow junior Andrew LeClair who, before the inning, told Cappelletti “I’m going to get on base and I need you to drive me in.” Cappelletti was confident; “F-M had no business ending our win streak,” he said of his line drive that extended their win streak to seven games.
The Varsity Softball team defeated the Hornets 6-1 in a dominant performance. Junior Mackenzie Keeler says the team was excited about playing the Hornets. “We came in wanting to compete and play our hardest against our rival class AA school” said Keeler who contributed a home run in the outing.
The Varsity Boys Lacrosse team lost to the Hornets 12-11 in heartbreaking fashion after tying the game to go into overtime. The Hornets’ extra period goal devastated the Red Rams because it came immediately after a turnover. “It was a tough one to lose right after (the team’s first loss to Cazenovia); we need to get back to work and get back to playing our game,” said junior midfielder Jake Risavi who was able to score a goal during the comeback. The Red Rams were led by sophomore attackman Griffin Cook, who had three goals and one assist.
The Varsity Girls Lacrosse team also fell to the Hornets by a score of 15-7. Just like the boys, the Lady Hornets led the whole game and remained dominant towards the end. However, the girls weren’t discouraged by their loss. “It was fun to play against such a competitive team close to us; even though we lost, we can learn from it, move on, and work harder to fix some mistakes,” said junior captain Lizzie O’Brien. O’Brien lead the Lady Rams with three goals and one assist.
