On Friday, Oct 30, 36 students from Jamesville-DeWitt High School attended the Empire State School Press Association at the Newhouse school on Syracuse University’s campus. The J-DHS students are all active members of Rambunctious, the yearbook or the RamPage and while at the conference, took part in educational seminars on topics such as design and photography, careers in communications, the responsible and smart way to utilize social media in promotion, and the sport of sports writing. Five RamPage writers participated in the Write-Off Contest, where competitiors have 45 minutes to interview and then an hour to write a story about the subject. Two photographers also competed in the Photo Shoot Out, where participants were given a theme and then a few hours to take their best picture around campus.
Co-Editors in Chief of Rampage, August Kissel and Julia Skeval took second and first place in the Write-Off Contest, respectively. Photographers Maggie Mannion won second place in the photo contest and Emily Maar received an honorable mentions.
The RamPage publication as a whole also sweeped the awards ceremony in several categories. Many articles won honorable mentions, bronze, silver and gold awards in their distinct genres (i.e. best feature story, best sports story, best editiorial writing). The RamPage won for most improved publication as well as first place for service to our school. And the students were also recognized for running one of the only all-online publications, winning them a Gold in the Overall Category for Online Publications for the fourth year in a row.
