At Jamesville-Dewitt High School, boys’ and girls’ variety golf teams stand as a testament of dedication, skill, and good sportsmanship. Through many different games played throughout the season, both teams managed to put their best foot forward no matter the difficulty of their matches. From their hard work and determination, both teams were able to have a good season with seniors Jaeda Robinson, Lila Schroth, juniors Kendall Cabiles, Natalie Christian, and sophomore Yara Farah qualifying for girls sectionals. Seniors Jackson Saroney, Samuel Ahn, and Brian Tollar qualified for boys’ state sectionals but only Saroney got into states. He won states on June 9.
Golfers qualify for sectionals if they have an E score in three or more matches out of their six. This year it was 50 strokes or under. Or, if the teams qualified, the players qualified individually as well. The qualifying process for sectionals is that the top six players play in the matches during the season, and it is their responsibility on how they are playing/scoring at the matches in order to get enough E scores.
“States was very scary at first but I thankfully managed through it,” said Saroney, reflecting on the intense pressure and competition. His goals for this season included improving his consistency and helping the team advance.
“My most challenging match this season was at Oswego Golf Club,” said Farah. Farah described that since it was a rainy day and the golf course was extremely muddy, it became challenging for her to walk through the golf course. Farah also said that the team’s biggest opponent was against ESM and Auburn because of the good golfers on their teams. Farah’s biggest goals for this season were to be on a close, hardworking team and to get as far as she could postseason.
“Our goal as a team this season was to work on self improvement with each match and to have a good time with each other,” said Robinson. Robinson’s toughest match this season was at the Pompey Club because of how nervous she was to perform. Robinson also said that this year’s biggest opponent was ESM because they scored closest overall as a team to J-D.
“Our biggest opponent this year was ESM because of how good their sportsmanship was,” said both Cables and Christian. Both Cables and Christian enjoyed this season because the team was successful and undefeated. Both of them also said their toughest match this season was at Auburn and ESM due to the terrible weather.
“The most difficult part of state qualifiers was how smaller schools had their regular season during the spring which put us at a huge disadvantage,” said both Tollar and Ahn. To train for states both students had to do their own training in their own free time. Both said their biggest goals for this season were to improve on their skills and to have a good time.
