With only seven more weeks left, the school year is almost over. A good idea to keep yourself busy and to make yourself some money this summer, is to get a job. Students can find places to work listed on the board in the Counseling Center or online.
Once you’ve found a job that looks appealing, the next step is to apply and create a resume. No one found the application process to be difficult. On your resume, you should include personal skills, like your ability to work well with a team, and being open to anything. Jobs want someone who can work with other people, and by yourself. They want someone with a growth mindset, the ability to strive to grow and change. Once you get into a job interview, some ways to be successful are to dress professionally, arrive early, have confidence, and ask questions.
Most students are more likely to get accepted at a food service company, like freshman Jude Harris. He used to work as an ice scooper/cashier at Bailey’s Dairy Treat. Some important things that he put on his resume were previous experiences and recommendations from respectable people. One thing that he emphasized was connections. He got the job through relatives. So, if you know a place that has some of your relatives there, that would be a good place to start.
Students are also more likely to be accepted at retail grocery stores, like freshman Eli Lange who currently works as a cashier at Tops. He recommends it since it is one of the few places that’ll actually hire a 14 year old, and the pay is good. Even with having a job during the school year, he doesn’t find it difficult balancing work and school. And one tip he gave was that if the workplace hasn’t responded back to your application, call them to see if they made a decision.
Junior Joseph Lore currently works at Drumlins Country Club. He chose it because it looked fun. He put his grades and volunteering work on his application. Lore doesn’t have a hard time juggling between school, sports, and work. He emphasized getting a job that you want to do.
Senior Lauren Bennett is currently working at a retail store called Once Upon a Child. Some things that she put on her resume were some clubs that she was in, and volunteering work. To prepare for her job interview, she reviewed common interview questions. She recommends applying and creating a resume early on.
