The Corporate Communications Class (CCC) at Jamesville-DeWitt High School is choosing to highlight suicide prevention this winter, planning a mental health week and a charity Varsity Boys Basketball Game.
The mental health week will mainly focus on mental health awareness by highlighting school resources. Also during mental health week, they plan on having daily positive quotes announced via RamFeed as well as advice from mental health experts at J-DHS.
The game will specifically highlight suicide prevention. In the previous years, the students had been fundraising to support Breast Cancer Awareness, but recently voted on the switch to suicide prevention. The students came up with highlighting suicide prevention, said CCC adviser Terri Eaton. The students think suicide is important because everyone should have someone to talk to and to know there are always resources.
They sold $15 t-shirts for the 988 Suicide Prevention basketball game on Dec. 7, 2024 at 6 p.m. J-D’s Red Rams will be playing Bishop Grimes, who they haven’t faced since March 2019. CCC members including junior Madelyn Murphy believe that the game would be a great place to showcase suicide prevention, because lots of people will be there to support the teamand it fits well on a Saturday night.
CCC teaches students about business, communicating with others, making plans, business terms, and how to be professional. In the future CCC plans to incorporate fun spring events in regards to mental health awareness.
