Underestimated and unphased. Excitement is in the air at the practices of the Jamesville-DeWitt-Solvay-Christian Brothers Academy-Westhill wrestling team. They credit the record of 9-1 to the coaches that push them hard each practice.
On Jan. 4, the wrestling team took their first loss of the season to Fulton. Junior Jake Wright said that they came into the match very confident. After wins against Phoenix and Mexico the team boasted an 8-0 record. Wright believes that this was the best team they’ve ever had.
“Everything’s going good so far,” said Wright, whose goals include winning the class tournament again, winning sectionals and, “to maybe win some matches at the state tournament.”
“We’re lookin pretty good,” said sophomore Adam Honis, who hopes the team places in the top three in sectionals. He also hopes to qualify for states. As Wright and Honis work toward sectionals and states, they need to make sure that they can last the full six minutes of a match.
Senior Chris Pappas has high hopes for this season. Pappas shares Honis’s goal to get top three in the section. Pappas wants to accomplish this by “working as hard as we can and (making) other people better.” Sophomore Kelvin Huynh has been maintaining a relaxed demeanor throughout this season. “I just want to make sectionals. States, I’m not there yet,” said Huynh.
