The 2015-2016 school year is under way and that means Jamesville-DeWitt High School’s homecoming is nearly here. On Friday, Sept. 25, the J-DHS Varsity Football team takes on the Carthage Comets at 6:30 p.m. There will be a ceremony to open the new turf field starting at 6:15. The homecoming dance will go from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are being sold during all lunches for $7 and will be available at the door for $10. Refreshments wil be sold during the dance.
“I‘m very excited [about homecoming] because it’s always fun to go and be with my friends,” said junior Nikki O’Hara. Similarly, junior Casey Kretsch is excited because a lot of people go to the game and dance. “I’m super excited because it is my last homecoming and I get to be in the front row this year,” said senior Hannah Moore.
This year’s homecoming game is extra special because it is the first athletic event on J-D’s new turf field. Junior Josh Kowalczyk, quarterback for the Varsity Football team, is looking forward to the homecoming game. “It’s definetly exciting; my teamates and I are really looking forward to beating Carthage this Friday night,” said Kowalczyk. Junior and safety Matt Paul is really looking forward to homecoming and hopes that his team can “catch a win.”
“It’s very exciting that homecoming is going to be the first game on the new turf. I think it’s a good way to start the [home] season off,” said freshman Jordan Archer. Similarly, freshman Chloe Butler thinks that the homecoming game will be a great way to open the turf. Junior Lucas Binder agrees with Archer and says “I think [homecoming] will be the perfect setting to J-DHS’s new turf.”
This year, the dance is right after the football game, a change from last year where the dance was the night after homecoming. “I like having the dance and the game on the same day because people are already at the school, so more people will go to the dance,” said junior Sophia Dimkopoulos. Sophomore Riley Cappelletti agree with Dimkopoulos. She said that last year she didn’t go to the dance because it was on a different night than homecoming, but this year she plans on going.
School Slate adviser Meghan McGee said that the dance was able to be moved back to after the game this year because homecoming did not fall during the date of a religious holiday, which was the issue last year. Ms. McGee also noted that there will be no bonfire this year, due to the size of the new facility covering the grounds that had been used for the bonfire in previous years.
