The Jamesville-DeWitt High School Varsity Girls Lacrosse team is off to a fast start for the 2015 season under new head coach, Dennis Kennedy. The team has an overal win-loss record of 8-4, and are 5-2 in their division. “I think [the season] is going well, a lot better than it was last year,” said sophomore Julia Kelner. Their record is the proof that this season is going better: 12 games into last year’s season, the team was 6-6. They won a total of 10 games last year and lost in the second round of sectionals. This year’s team has a chance to match and surpass the 10 win mark before the regular season ends, as well as march further in sectionals.
Of course, this success doesn’t just come out of nowhere. In order to be successful, people or teams have to set goals. “We want to make it to sectionals, and win the sectional championship,” said freshman Meg Hair. The team not only had lacrosse goals, but also had goals of becoming closer as a team. “We want to be a family on and off the field,” said freshman Emma Prosak.
The family philosophy is part of a new culture brought in by Coach Kennedy. “He has brought a new level of energy and passion for the game that we haven’t really seen or experienced before at J-D,” said senior Jess Wipper. The success of the new culture has helped the team win enough games to have a spot in sectionals. They finish up their regular season with a home game against Marcellus on May 12 for senior night, and a visit to Cortland on May 15, before heading off to sectionals with their goal of a sectional championship within reach.
