Jamesville- DeWitt High School’s Junior Ailis McVearry is battling osteosarcoma, and J-DHS’s National Honors Society is putting on their annual fashion show in honor of her. The show will be held on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 6 p.m. to raise money to be donated to St. Baldricks Foundation for pediatric cancer research, said NHS president and senior Sarah Marron.
In June of 2014, McVearry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that affected her leg. After 18 rounds of chemotherapy, 130 days in the hospital, and surgery to remove the tumor in her leg, she finished her last treatmeant this February. She is now working to regain her strength to hopefully be back with her classmates soon.
Marron was talking to her guidance counselor Clete Gualtieri when they thought of the idea to raise money to benefit this cause. “I think (pediatric cancer research) is an amazing cause because it doesn’t get the support it needs, so I think it is something really cool that we are doing,” said NHS vice president and senior Brian Cieplicki. Adviser Courtney Romeiser believes very strongly in fundraising for this cause, “the need for pedistric cancer research funding and having strike one of our very own students, I think we need to help out,” she said.
Modeling this year’s fashions are the NHS seniors. There will two different categories being modeled, casual wear and formal wear. Boom Babies will be donating formal and casual wear for the girls and the guys will have tuxedoes provided by Men’s Wearhouse. “(Boom Babies and Men’s Wearhouse) fit us and let us borrow their clothes for a chance of free advertisement and publicity for their store,” said Marron who added that Boom Babies would have a stand set up to advertise outside of the doors.
This year, tickets will not be sold, but there will be a $5 donation box at the front door. “And if people feel strongly about the cause and want to donate more than $5, of course, we welcoming that,” said Ms. Romeiser.
