What is your club called?
Our club is the Umoja Club.
What does your club do?
[We] learn about African-Americans then and now. We encourage our members to break barriers and stereotypes while defining their own strengths. We also host crafts, field trips, and prepare a Black history month mural and assembly.
Why should people join your club?
[People should join] because we are no longer looking for validation from a society that tells us to be something you’re not. Be proud of the skin you’re in.
When and where does your club meet?
W-01/large group room.
Is there anything you’d like to say to students at J-DHS?
Please support us with our Soul Food Festival; candy gram sales; J-D Day popcorn snow cones, and cotton candy; and our Black History Month decorating contest.
But most of all,
“The more variety, the better society. Inclusion is not a matter of political correctness. It is the key to growth.”
