The annual Hoops for Courage game at J-DHS was originally Friday, February 4, but due to the snow day, the big game was postponed to Wednesday, February 9. The players had some high expectations for the game with hopes many people would show up to come support them and the cause they’re playing for, Camp Good Days.
Captain Brendan Kohberger expressed his pre-game thoughts. “I hope that a lot of people come out and support, and we have a lot of people wearing [Hoops for Courage] shirts to contribute to those who need help.”
The leading scorer of the Hoops for Courage game was Kohberger with 24 points, and following him was junior Anthony Stickle with 11 points, one of which being a 3-point shot, and finally junior Ian Delpha with 5 points, with one being a 3-point shot.
The final score of the game was 49-34 with the Red Rams taking the victory over ESM. With the theme being grey out, and the student section really showed up, making this game the biggest student they’ve had all season.
Coach Jeff Ike stated, “We talk about a bigger crowd, it’s a little more hostile. Everyone should stick to the fundamentals, play the defense we were taught, and run the offense we were taught. Also, stay focused.” This seemed to really work considering they came out with a solid win for the Red Rams.
Senior Ben Schellinger, who scored four points in the game, stated that J-D won because “[In] defense and practices and energy we work harder than anybody else.” The team seems to have some great chemistry and great coaching staff making the hard work seem fun for the players.
