On Monday, June 14, during homeroom classes, videos made by the three 2021-2022 student Board representative candidates will be played. The student Board representative attends all J-D Board of Education meetings and represents the students of J-D. Voting will take place, presumably via a Google Form, on Tuesday. The three candidates are Grace Evans, Lucy Heflin, and Konrad Souser. Each candidate would like to share their goals if they were elected to this position.
Grace Evans
Why did you choose to run for this position?
I chose to run for student Board representative because I’ve always admired this position and desired the responsibilities that it entitles. In addition, I feel that this position plays an integral part in the school – specifically the student – community, which is something that I have constantly tried to further my involvement during my time at J-DHS.
What would be your goals as a representative?
My goals as a representative would be to effectively communicate the thoughts and ideas of the entire student population. This means surveys, polls, and even face-to-face conversations will all be taken into consideration when weighing in on important topics that are discussed at meetings. I am aware that this position does not always mean communicating my own beliefs, but rather those that are prevalent in the majority of my peers and classmates, which I believe is an extremely important realization to efficiently represent the student community.
Why should J-D vote for you?
J-D should vote for me because I truly believe that I will be able to fulfill the role of student board representative to high standards. I am approachable and accessible to all students, which furthers the effectiveness of my platform, and also diligent and organized, which allows me to better communicate between the student population and the BOE.
Lucy Heflin
Why did you choose to run for this position?
I am running to be the student Board representative because I think it is extremely important for there to be a student voice on the Board of Education, and I think I’m the best person to articulate that voice.
What would be your goals as a representative?
As your student representative on the Board, I would make sure to advocate for issues that concern students and be a resource to board members so that they can understand student concerns and thoughts before they vote on policy. I want to be able to provide insight for board members on student issues and concerns about the state of the school.
Why should J-D vote for you?
J-D should vote for me because I am the most qualified and prepared candidate. By being a three-season athlete, former pit band participant, and member of the school-wide student government for two years, I have shown my dedication to this school. I also am very friendly and know many people through my various activities (and would love to meet more!). This will help with my effort to get as much student input as possible on school issues when participating in Board discussions. I am also educated (and continue to make an effort to further this education) on nationwide issues, such as discrimination and climate change, which makes me a good person to articulate a student voice on these matters. I’ve talked with former student Board representatives, so I fully understand what this position entails and I’m ready to work hard to make sure your voice is heard. Thanks for considering me!
Konrad Souser
Why did you choose to run for this position?
I chose to run in this position because I felt that the Board of Education needed more members who talked on behalf of the students, and not themselves. I feel that if I was elected onto the board, then more students could have their voices heard, as I would speak for them, and not for myself.
What would be your goals as a representative?
My ultimate goal is to strengthen the students’ voices in the Board, so that the Board can make their decisions based on how the students will react and what the students will have to do when a new policy or protocol is put in action. I also wanted to make sure that students could get their opinions out into the system by using me as an unbiased gateway to the Board.
Why should J-D vote for you?
It would be in J-D’s best interest to vote for me, since I will always try to find the students point of view, and argue for it. I will also always speak on the students’ behalf, and keep my own opinions out of the equation.
