The Jamesville-DeWitt High School Varsity Girls Golf Team has driven their way to an outstanding season and ended their regular season undefeated, 16-0. Helping the team win these matches was senior Molly Hair. Along with her outstanding golf skills, she serves as a role model for the team. Both of these things helped Hair to earn a scholarship to play Division 1 Golf at Fairfield University in Connecticut.
Although it will be a shame to lose Hair next season, her accomplishments throughout the past five years will surely be remembered. She has played on the varsity level since eighth grade, when she made her first First Team All League. In the years following, Hair only got better. As a sophomore, she qualified for states and broke two school records. As a junior, Hair qualified for states again and broke another school record. As for this season, Hair’s individual goals are to make the state team for a third year and to break another individual record. Hair was also recently named News Channel 9’s Athlete of the Week, an honor that she’s very modest about.
Hair’s teammates praise her for not only being an amazing golfer, but bringing enthusiasm to the team. “She’s very upbeat and and helps us to succeed,” said freshman Emily Pike. “Molly completes the team,” said sophomore Shelby Woyciesjes. Her teammates said that Hair’s consistent performances at matches and good scores help the team to be successful.
Hair hopes to continue her success in both academics and athletics at Fairfield University. She chose this school in particular because she will have the opportunity to compete at the top level for golf. Hair’s current scores would also allow her to be in the top five on the team, allowing her to compete in tournaments with her new team even as a freshman. Academically, Hair hopes to keep a good GPA and eventually go into business. Along with meeting her personal needs for a school, Hair also liked how “it had the aura of a big school, even though it’s pretty small.”
Along with Hair, senior Victoria Roney has also contributed greatly to the team. Roney was this year’s OHSL champion, with a school record of 78. Her outstanding performance during this match helped the team come in first, beating second place winner CBA by 50 points. Not only does Roney contribute to matches but also to the team in general. “She’s great and helps to keep everyone involved,” said junior Junghye Kim. “She’s a good team player,” Pike says.
So far this year, the team has broken the school record for lowest team score in addition to going undefeated. “Everyone played really well and improved a lot,” said Woyciesjes. Sectionals was held on May 20 at Kanon Valley. This year, the team competed in Class A, which has tougher competition than Class B, the section they were in before. The team as a whole came in fourth place behind Auburn, Fayetteville-Manlius, and New Hartford. Hair also placed third individually.“We did ok this year. Everyone could have played better,” said Kim.
Hair and Kim both qualified for states during this match. “I want to improve from last year’s match,” said Hair. As for Kim, who is going to be attending her first states match, she hopes to “not embarrass herself and play decently.” States will be held on June 13 in Delhi.
