17 Jamesville-DeWitt High School athletes were selected for the Post Standard’s Central New York 2013 all-star fall sports teams. For each sport, a panel of Section III coaches, along with staff from the Post-Standard, choose a group of athletes that they believe to have been successful this season.
The majority of students who made the All-CNY team were swimmers. Seniors Kalie Coyne and Molly Hair, junior Hayley Schultz, sophomores Alden Coyne and Sophia Farchione, along with the only freshman, and co-author of this article, Kate Salvo, were selected for the All-CNY swim team. All six girls selected made it to the state championship this past November. Hair said she believes the fact that she built a relationship with her team helped her to earn a spot. “I was on the All-CNY golf team for the past two years, but this was my first time for swimming,” said Hair. “I think having a positive attitude definitely helps,” said Hair. “Winning the 200 IM at the state qualifier meet was a big achievement,” said K. Coyne. The medley relay of Farchione, Schultz, K. Coyne, and A. Coyne placed fifth in the state, along with setting a Class B and school record. “That was a big accomplishment for all of us,” said Farchione.
Seniors Rasheed Baker, Peter Crossett, and Matt Thompson were placed on this year’s All-CNY football team. Crossett, who also made the All-State team, said that the team’s overall accomplishments ensured him a spot on this year’s team. They made playoffs, even with a number of injuries to key players. The Bobby Gilson award, which is given to a player who showed utmost dedication to the sport of football, was earned by Crossett this season.
The boys and girls varsity soccer team had a combined total of three players on the All-CNY team. Juniors Erin Brinley and Caroline Kopp were placed on the girl’s team. “The biggest accomplishment of the season was the team winning sectionals,” said Brinley. “Helping my team get there was something that probably helped me make the All-CNY team,” said Brinley. Senior Adam Resetaris was the only J-DHS Varsity Boy’s Soccer player to earn a spot on this year’s All-CNY team. “My stats from this season were 12 goals, and eight assists this season ” said Resetaris. The team also won their sectional semi-final game, in which they played No. 1 ranked Fowler.
The JD/Fayetteville-Manlius gymnastics team had two J-DHS students make it on to the All-CNY team. Senior Taylor Riley and sophomore Anyi Liebler-Bendix were selected. The J-DFM team won sectionals, and had 18 of the 19 gymnasts qualify. “I think we had a really good team overall this year,” said Riley. “Our team was a lot younger this year than previously, and that helped push me to try harder and to act as a leader,” said Riley.
J-DHS also had girls make the All-CNY team in cross-country, volleyball, and tennis. Junior Emilee Carpenter, who runs cross-country, said that the personal records she broke this season was why she was placed on the team. She also qualified for the state championship. In girls tennis, senior Kyrin Pollock won individual sectionals, and places top 16 in the state tournament. “I had a lot of tough competition this season, which helped much me,” said Pollock. The team also made it to finals in their league. Senior Laura Wildridge also qualified for an All-CNY team in volleyball.
